Rough Sledding for Cowen
Brian Cowen has undergone a baptism of fire since unexpectedly replacing Prime Minister Bertie Ahern, who stepped down in the hope that his departure would ensure that his legal difficulties did not distract the government from tackling a “challenging” economic situation and delivering a positive outcome in the June referendum on the EU reform treaty. Unfortunately, Ahern’s resignation prevented neither the rejection of the Lisbon Treaty nor a descent into economic crisis, and Cowen has been left to clean up the mess. The European Commission has threatened disciplinary action if the government fails to close a budget gap that is projected to reach at least 5.5% of GDP this year. New Center-Right Coalition
On December 9, Lithuania’s 141-seat parliament approved the formation of a new coalition government under the leadership of Prime Minister Andrius Kubilius. The deputies backed the Kubilius’s government by a vote of 83 to four, with five abstentions. The new coalition consists of Kubilius’s Homeland Union-Lithuanian Christian Democratic Party (TS-LKD), the National Revival (TPP), the Liberal Movement (LRLS), and the Liberal and Central Union (LCS). The coalition will be known as the “Coalition of Changes.” The installation of the new government came in the wake of a comfortable October election victory for Kubilius’s party, which captured 44 seats against the 26 seats garnered by the Social Democratic Party (LSDP). The TPP pulled 16 seats, followed by the Order and Justice Party (TT) with 15 seats. The LRLS received 11 seats and the Coalition of Labor Party
